Lee's early education laid the foundation for his future political endeavors. Proficient in English, Chinese, Malay, and Tamil, he ventured to London to study at the prestigious London School of Economics and Political Science before earning a law degree from Fitzwilliam House, Cambridge, where he topped the honours list. His socialist inclinations shaped his early career as he championed the cause of trade unions and fought for workers' rights.
In the early 1950s, Lee recognized the need for constitutional reform in Singapore, where a legislative council of wealthy Chinese businessmen held sway. Forming an alliance with political newcomers, David Saul Marshall and Lim Yew Hock, he sought to challenge the status quo. However, Lee's unwavering commitment to change soon led him to form his own party, the People's Action Party (PAP), with the support of some communists.
The PAP's meteoric rise culminated in 1959 when Lee assumed the role of Singapore's first prime minister.
